LA to Potential Disasters: What, Me Worry?

New, 14 comments

With our current traffic, it's a wonder our city actually makes it through the workweek without coming to a complete standstill. Throw disaster into that mix, and we're utterly screwed, reports the Daily News' Kerry Cavanaugh. An audit released Monday by city controller Laura Chick said LA is ill-prepared to manage a large-scale catastrophe like a major earthquake or visit from Al Quaeda. Some departmental disaster plans haven't been updated in 15 years. This is especially egregious considering the city has a total dedicated staff of nearly 88 full-time positions for crisis management, costing nearly $10.9 million a year. Until the mayor makes disaster planning a priority, feel free to panic. [Daily News]
