How Dangerous Are Those 4th of July Sparklers?

New, 13 comments

So Palmdale allows so called "safe and sane fireworks" like sparklers, smoke balls and ground spinners, ie, fireworks that do not leave the ground or explode. But Lancaster doesn't allow fireworks and now the mayor of Lancaster is subtly disparaging the mayor of Palmdale for allowing those potentially dangerous fireballs. Via the Daily News: "Lancaster Mayor R. Rex Parris said Monday that he thinks "safe and sane" fireworks are dangerous - a veiled criticism of neighboring Palmdale, which allows their sale. 'Safe and sane is dangerous,' Parris said. 'Experts tell us it is absolutely insane to sell these things.'" The mayor said the comments at a news conference about fireworks in anticipation of July 4th; according to the paper, Palmdale is just one of 38 cities in the county allowing safe and sane fireworks. And a reminder: All fireworks, including safe and sane fireworks, are illegal in the city of Los Angeles. Right. [Image of illegal fireworks in China] [Daily News]
