Already a hit in European cities like Paris, public bike rentals are slowly gaining traction in the U.S. with Washington unveiling SmartBike DC this summer, reports U.S. News & World Report. Pedal-pushers swipe a credit card at various kiosks around the city, unlock a pretty red bike, ride it to wherever, and return it to another kiosk for a small fee. Transportation planners see this as a great way to get people out of cars, and a fun option for money-blowing tourists. Albuquerque is working on just such a program. Come on, LA, if Albuquerque can do it, we can; Beverly Hills, Downtown, Hollywood, Leimert Park, Long Beach, Santa Monica, Silver Lake and WeHo would all be perfect kiosk candidates.
