"Contrary to what the balloon lobby would like you to believe, the California Public Utilities Commission calculates that these balloons cause hundreds of serious problems for the utilities and grave financial losses for affected businesses and manufacturers." That's Senator Jack Scott, who proposed the bill that would ban foil balloons, writing an editorial in today's Los Angeles Times. At issue is whether these balloons get caught in power lines; the balloon lobby has said there's not a single incident in which a balloon has caused an outage. Scott pulls out the numbers and cites actual examples "....Mylar balloon that brought down a power line in Stockton last month caused a fire near an elementary school." [Los Angeles Times]
