The Argonaut has the latest on the shiny new $1.5 million Ferris wheel on the Santa Monica Pier that'll open next Wednesday with a big kick-off party. This being Santa Monica, the thing is tidy and efficient, using 160,000 energy-efficient LED (light-emitting diode) lights that'll "provide 75 percent greater energy savings than the previous incandescent bulbs...With the adaptation of its solar-power application, the Pacific Park wheel will continue to be the world's only solar-powered Ferris wheel, park staff said." That party next week will include a big pyrotechnics show and locals are quite proud of the wheel. "We have strived to create a Ferris wheel that Santa Monica and all of Southern California can be proud of for years to come," Jeff Klocke, director of marketing and sales at Pacific Park on the Santa Monica Pier, tells the paper. The last wheel, now living in a retirement home, was sold on Ebay earlier this year.
