A porn store sits next to a kid's furniture shop in an ill-planned pocket of East LA, but a much-needed make-over is coming to Whittier Boulevard, reports the Los Angeles Times, with condos, apartments, and "European-style, street-level shops and restaurants below homes planned" for this 16-mile stretch of Whittier Boulevard. Some of these changes are big, some small, but here is what's planned, according to the paper:
---$4.5 million to fix sidewalls, curbs, and add palm trees [Ed: Palm trees? Evil trees aren't banned?].
-- Plans to clean stores, fix signs, and other cosmetic tweaks along Whittier near the 605.
---A $12 million "beautification project" along Whittier and Montebello boulevards that'll offer 55 rental units (senior-housing) with 23,000 square feet of commercial space.
---A $40-million, 96-unit town house development at Whittier, between Virginia and 1st avenues.
---Nearby in Montebello, Oscar De La Hoya's Golden Glove development company is planning 80 Mediterranean-style condominiums. [Via Gilbert Estrada]
