Reality Check for Olvera Street

New, 25 comments

Downtown's Olvera Street tourist trap and surrounding museums--formally known as El Pueblo Historic Monument--is on shaky financial ground and needs to get its act together, according to an editorial in this week's Downtown News. With Olvera Street suckling the City's budget teat to the tune of $1 million per year despite 2 million annual visitors, paper responds by noting: "Rents paid by many of the 79 merchants need to be adjusted. At a recent meeting of the City Council's Budget and Finance Committee, El Pueblo General Manager Robert Andrade testified that many of the merchants have not seen a rent increase since the 1980s." Also coming soon to Olvera Street: A 30% increase in parking fees. [Downtown News]
