Councilman Jose Huizar's motion to expand the downtown arts district, a move that would encourage more development, just passed. As previously discussed on the site, the issue of where-and how to-develop downtown has been rather contentious. Via the Inbox: "The city council action was unanimous. Jose Huizar said the expanded area was "a great place to build a community." And ouch, there's this, a comment by Councilman Ed Reyes that's like a shot across the bow. Writes our tipster: "Addressing the issue of industrial uses that would be displaced by this “community,” Ed Reyes said that councilpersons, not the planning department, should determine the priority for preserving industrial land in their individual districts." Yes, why even have a planning department. [Curbed InBox]
