Last spring's big flap about whether the cameras installed along the Santa Monica Third Street Promenade actually recorded any footage of illegal activity had Santa Monica police defending the cameras, saying their mere presence helped deter crime. Now, Long Beach is also beefing up its security, eventually putting 30 more cameras (there are already 17), around the city in an effort to enhance public safety in its commercial district. Have the existing 17 cameras helped deter crime? One hopes. [Press-Telegram]
