Freeway Cameras Not Rolling on Highways Anytime Soon

New, 4 comments

Remember back in '05, when there seemed to be a freeway shooting every week? Politicians discussed activating and updating the 400 cameras lining L.A. and Ventura County freeways to catch perps. (Caltrans just uses the outdated cams to monitor traffic.) Once the shootings slowed, so did the urgency to get the cameras recording. But when a woman was killed last week on the 10, the Daily News asked about the cameras and discovered budget shortfalls have also delayed, if not killed, the proposal. The update would cost between $1.5 million- $5 million. But isn't that chump change?
