It was just about a year ago that demolition began on the Frank Gehry-designed 27-year-old Santa Monica mall, and construction began on a younger, prettier mall. With a forthcoming Nordstrom and a Bloomingdales (which will replace Macy's, the only store in the mall currently open), the new Macerich-run project will be less mall-ey (probably no Orange Julius) and more urban and outdoorsy; think public walkways, large gathering places, and a third-floor dining deck with ocean views (see renderings). As for stores? Racked LA recently reported that Kitson and Joe's Jeans stores are coming.
