Rent Check: Two-Bedroom In Historic Los Altos Apartments

New, 18 comments

If history is an important consideration when apartment hunting, you may want to know about the Los Altos apartments in Mid-Wilshire. Designated as a Los Angeles Cultural Monument No. 311 in 1986 and listed on the National Historic Register, the building currently has one and two-bedroom apartments for rent. The listing claims the building is newly renovated and "no details were spared." (Although as far as we know, the renovation referred to took place in the 1990s.) The Spanish Colonial-style building was erected in 1925, went bankrupt during the Depression and apparently was in such a state of disrepair that "the building was so unlivable there were large gaping holes from the fifth floor down to the lobby." Post-renovation, the apartments feature hardwood floors, beamed ceilings, detailed molding, and lots of mahogany. The building is currently featuring a "move-in special" with two weeks free (throwing into question LA Weekly's 2005 assertion that there's a 300-person waiting list). Currently, a two-bedroom, two-bath apartment rents for $3,400 per month.
