First it was living in bathrooms, now New Yorkers are being forced to endure reduced transit service and higher fares (possibly $2.50 for a subway ride, double what LA pays), reports The New York Times. Don't take glee in the misfortune of others—appreciate the implausible passing of Measure R, which ensured LA's transit fares won't rise until at least 2010. Meanwhile, a sampling of fares in other cities: SF is $1.50 for the Muni, DC doesn't have a fixed rate, but rush-hour base is $1.65 per trip, and Chicago will set you back two bucks. [New York Times]
