The editors at U.S. News & World Report say that one of the best careers for craptastic 2009 is an "Urban Regional Planner." Apparently, cities will always need de-sucking. This is how the mag describes the gig: "redeveloping blighted areas; choosing proper land use for a particular parcel; managing transportation, housing, environmental protection, or historic preservation." If you go into planning, it's smart to be a specialist, specifically with transportation issues (Obama loves transit) and private-sector planning (more freedom). And if you take the plunge, you'll probably need a bachelor's degree. What can you expect to take home? About $62,500. [U.S. News & World Report]
