New Eli Broad Beverly Hills Museum Coming?

New, 6 comments

Beverly Hills Weekly columnist Rudy Cole drops this juicy bit of news this week: Philanthropist Eli Broad is in talks with Beverly Hills city officials about creating a museum at Wilshire and Santa Monica (currently a Starbucks is on the site) to house at least part of his art collection. Via the paper: "Broad, the retired partner of one of the world’s leading home builders, has long been a major benefactor of the arts and his collection a subject of interest by museums everywhere, including LACMA. How much of his collection would come to Beverly Hills and what kind of museum he envisions is not yet known – everything is tentative, but a very interesting possibility." Readers will remember that in January Broad surprised--and embarrassed--the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA) by announcing that rather than give away his collection to the museum, he would create an independent foundation that would make loans to museums. We gotta wonder if there's any link between January's news and this more recent news. Meanwhile, the New York Times reminds us that Broad's "private collection of some 2,000 works of Modern and contemporary art is one of the most sought-after by museums nationwide.."
