Redondo Beach Tackles the Butt

New, 3 comments

Sales of booze and cigarettes always climb in economic recessions, but don't light up in Redondo Beach. Yesterday, city officials voted to outlaw smoking along the shore and in public parks, reports the Daily Breeze's Kristin Agostoni, despite one councilman's concern that banning cigarettes won't help with the butt-littering problem. To illustrate the problem, Councilman Steve Diel showed off a plastic bag of butts picked up at Hermosa Beach, which also bans smoking. Meanwhile, with "a new ordinance in place, Redondo's coastline will no longer be the only South Bay beach where smokers can legally light up." [Daily Breeze]
