A simple question about CNN's weird signage has turned out not to be so simple, and once again, this all turns into into a discussion about signage and city rules. Ach. The CNN murals are artwork created by artist Mike McNeilly, and part of a series called "Focus on Hollywood." But the murals are being used as a legal tactic. The city is fighting supergraphic advertising (the whole issue has been going through the courts), and if a new city ordinance is drafted, any existing graphics would be grandfathered in and allowed, according to McNeilly. By having this giant image up, which is essentially a placeholder, it's an attempt to have supergraphics on the building grandfathered in. So now you know. Previous story here.
