LA RIVER: There's a big press event called the "Mingling of the Waters" that will happen on the LA River tomorrow. Here's the description: "A ceremony to join “sister rivers” in the international movement for urban river restoration—the Los Angeles River and the Isar River of Munich, Germany. Water from the Isar has been brought to Los Angeles by a delegation here to share their successful river restoration experience with the Los Angeles River community. Munich has “re-naturized” more than 8 miles of the Isar, once encased in concrete and now providing beaches, meadows, bikepaths—even surfing!—right through the center of the city." WHAT: A ceremony to join “sister rivers” in the international movement
for urban river restoration—the Los Angeles River and the Isar
River of Munich, Germany. Water from the Isar has been
brought to Los Angeles by a delegation here to share their
successful river restoration experience with the Los Angeles
River community. Munich has “re-naturized” more than 8 miles
of the Isar, once encased in concrete and now providing
beaches, meadows, bikepaths—even surfing!—right through the
center of the city.
WHO: Councilmember Tom LaBonge, Friends of the Los Angeles River
and other key players in the L.A. River restoration community.
Representing the Isar River: Hep Monatzeder, Deputy Mayor
(Green Party); Ralf Wulf, Head of the Dept. of Engineering and
Waterways; Dr. Klaus Arzet, Head of the State Office of Water
Management; Ulrich Illing, Head of the Dept. of Urban Planning;
and Daniella Schaufuss, Isar Plan Manager.
WHEN: Thursday, October 2, 2008 at 11:00 a.m.
WHERE: Guardians of the River Gate, the Los Angeles River at Los Feliz
Blvd. (northwest corner, park at Eatz parking lot, ascend rise at
south end of lot).
WHY: As Los Angeles continues to marshall the political will and
funding to restore the Los Angeles River, it is both useful and
inspiring to look at examples of other urban rivers brought back
from degradation. The Isar delegation will present a video and
talk at a free public forum at 6 pm on Thursday evening at the
auditorium at the DWP, 111 N. Hope St., tour L.A. River Master
Plan “opportunity sites” on Friday, Oct. 3, and will receive a
Rivvie award at Friends of the LA River’s annual RioFest!, to be
held Saturday, Oct. 4 from 5 – 10 pm on the Sixth Street Bridge
spanning the L.A. River in downtown L.A.
