As widely reported, two manhole covers popped open on 3rd St. yesterday during an explosion at an underground utility vault. One police officer was hurt by the rush of steam coming out, while his patrol car was damaged when one of the manhole covers went flying into the undercarriage of this car. Yes, bad luck--the officer had parked right over one of the manholes (the one on the left). Additionally, underground gunk spewed all over his car. Not able to get past the yellow police tape, we handed our camera off to a policeman. Here is his photo essay. He had a little fun at the end. UPDATE: A nice reader informs us that this is Commander Andy Smith of Central City East.
