This is one thorny Ask Curbed. Just the question hurts our head. Any advice for this poor girl?
"I have been subpoenaed to show up to a small claims appeal at the Chatsworth courthouse. My roommate sued the landlord for our security deposit and won and now the landlord appealed and wants me and my other roommates there. I don't want to go and I gave my roommate my power of attorney. Is there anyway I can avoid going to the hearing? My landlord served me 6 days (not the required 10) before the court date and never even signed the subpoena. Also, I forgot to request witness fees. Can I do this now and if they don't pay i don't have to show?"
