The Catch: Preposterous Pricing For Your Credit Check

Another reader-submitted Catch. You're finally, ahem, catching on. The Catch features everything-looks-good-except listings. Submissions to the tipline here.

What/Where: Furnished penthouse condo for rent in downtown Long Beach for $1800
Looks Good, Right?: The price for a 2 bedroom ain't bad and it's nicely furnished. "2 big Bedrooms, 2 baths, 2 deck like balconies, TOP 5th Floor, elevator, indoor secured Parking, close to beach, artistic loft like spacious livingroom, sunny, A/C, bright, brand new wood floor, floor to ceiling glass sliding doors, dishwasher, totally updated, beautifully landscaped court yard, close to shopping district on Pine Ave, Cityplaces, Boarders Bookstore, Starbucks, Pike and all restaurants. Few minutes drive to the ocean & beach, close to 405, 605 & 710, blue line to downtown LA and airport."
The Catch: So what's the problem here? Well, the owner wants to run a credit check on every applicant. Still sounds reasonable. For $100. Whoa. Kind of steep for a credit check, dude. As our reader wrote in: "$100 for a credit application? Seems like an easy way to make money. Why even bother renting the place just live there and have people fill out credit applications."
