The Daily Breeze checks in on that Redondo Beach couple and their tin can home aka the container home. Anna and Sven Pirkl tell the paper they expected to spend $125-$150 per square foot building the container home (compared with the $250-$300 per square foot they'd spend on a more traditional home), but went over budget. Also, the couple had some bad luck during construction: "Sven fell from a ladder while trying to seal a gap between two shipping crates. He broke his back and wrist and was confined to bed for weeks."
"That night, I couldn't breathe," Anna, who feared her husband was paralyzed, tells the paper. "I remember thinking, the hell with this silly house of ours." The story has a happy ending, though.
