The former headquarters for the 69 East Crips street gang at 69th and Main streets was bulldozed yesterday and city officials want to build affordable housing on the site. As expected, gang HQs aren't particularly nice--there were 18 arrests and 13 drive-by shootings within a four-year period at the apartments, while the surrounding area had the highest rates of homicides, aggravated assaults, robberies and rapes in the Newton region. Two of the apartment complex buildings and a nearby vacant church were purchased; the plan is to create affordable homes under the Council District Nine Corridors South of the Santa Monica Freeway Recovery Redevelopment Project Area’s Homeownership Opportunity Sites Program. (Uhm, good idea but longest program name ever?)
