Prompting memories of when face recognition software was going to rule the world, Santa Monica has turned on its crime fighting, terrorism-thwarting, but mostly homeless and tourist-filming cameras. The cameras are "housed in dark bubbled spheres on light poles" on the Third Street Promenade and Santa Monica Pier if you want your own Kodak moment. Oddly, the cameras don't allow police to zoom in on anyone's face. So any arrests? asks The Lookout (actually, the newspaper asks for hard figures on arrests and citations) but the police didn't provide that info by deadline. But it's also about deterring crime, say police.
