Surfer Shop May Be Saved

Developers wanted to build a 14-unit mixed-use rental/retail project on the former site of the Zephyr shop, Santa Monica hangout of the Z-boys, but now the Landmarks Commission has nominated the 2001-2011 Main St. building for landmark designation, according to The Argonaut. A meeting on the matter (we'd just prefer a surf-off to decide the whole thing) is scheduled for Monday, May 14th.

Meanwhile, how about a little compromise, asks project architect Howard Laks, who has whipped up a plan that incorporates both the surf shop and the apartment. His plans would tear down the parking lot and artist studios in the back of the building, and preserve the Horizons shop in the front.
