The area of Griffith Park once called an "inadequate, ugly, poorly designed and under-financed collection of beat-up cages" has been promoted. WebUrbanist now lists the Old LA Zoo among seven amazing American abandonments. Even though the 1930s structures were emptied and gutted in the 1960s - and nearly caught fire this year - they still stand today. (Unlike another architectural abandonment across town.) Unfortunately, fire damage blocked paths to and from the WPA-renovated structures and, for now, the city insists the the Old Zoo is closed to the public.
