Ask Curbed: What Happens During a Rental Inspection?

New, 27 comments

Brush your hair and stand up straight! Sending in the photo seen here, a reader asks: "I walked out of my rental unit this morning and saw a TENANT INSPECTION NOTICE taped up to the mailboxes. It says Los Angeles Housing Departments' records indicate our building is due for an inspection and specifies that tenants should 'arrange for access to units.' So they're coming around and during work hours. Obviously I am not taking off work to greet these housing people. Should I tell my landlord to just grant access to my apartment or is that dumb? And I am morbidly curious: What kind of infractions are they looking for?" Any advice for this young fellow?
