Sidetracking from a question about purchasing a house or a townhouse, the Wall Street Journal points out that townhouses are sometimes, and wrongly, lumped into the single-family detached home group or the condominium group (basically if a townhouse is be owned without the lot, it falls in the category of being a condo or co-op). But back to the question: What appreciates faster, a townhouse or home? There's no firm answer, says the WSJ. Dammit. Just check out public records to see sale stats, and consider traffic, crime, and then just buy the house you like, says the paper.
