Bolt the door and turn all the lights on. The Rock Haven Sanitarium in Montrose (west of La Canada Flintridge) is up for sale. Plans for the historic sanitarium, which once housed the insane mother of Marilyn Monroe, may include tear down or adaptive reuse into condos. Via the Press-Telegram:
The property served as a women's rest home until September, when owners Ararat Home of Los Angeles forced the residents out. Ararat Home bought the property just four years ago, but decided to close down due to the difficulty of maintaining the old facility. Once known as the "Screen Actor's Sanitarium," Rock Haven was once home to Marilyn Monroe's mother and Hollywood starlet Frances Farmer, local historian Mike Lawler said. It was also the last sanitarium in the valley.
While at the sanitarium, Gladys Monroe attempted suicide several times and even managed to escape in 1963. The three acre property is being sold as one big scary piece, no listing price given or found.
