The historic West Hollywood property called “Tara” (after the estate in “Gone with the Wind”), located at 1343 Laurel Ave., will be getting some old people as new residents. After two years of contentious debate, the West Hollywood City Council voted to build 27 units of low income senior housing on the property. The plan also includes a renovation of the mansion and the chauffeur’s quarters, and landscaping for a public park. After the former owner, Elsie Weisman, left the property to the City, West Hollywood proposed the affordable senior housing development in 2004. Then all hell broke loose as seniors and gays faced off over the development. One side thought the development would ruin the landmark property and the other side wanted a place for some of those old people to live. The old people won for now.
