Remember the Michael Keaton tour de force Pacific Heights? (Also among Melanie Griffith's and Matthew Modine's best work, their work with Jonathan Demme notwithstanding, of course). He never pays his rent, drives the other tenants away, and systematically ruins the lives of his landlords. Plus we seem to remember something about cockroaches. Anyway, we were reminded of that movie when we read this story about a Monterey Park couple squatting at elderly homeowner's property, defrauding owners of $5 million and renting out about 100 homes. If we remember correctly, it didn't turn out that well for Michael Keaton either. Crime never pays.
