Rumblings & Bumblings: Nothing Doing At Gas Station, Chapman Bankers

And now the answers to Tuesday's Rumblings and Bumblings questions. If you have a question about a building, a dirt lot, a construction site, feel free to send an email for next week's edition of R & B.
2008.07.lickit.jpg

1) Hollywood: A reader professes to know what's going on at the abandoned gas station on Western and Hollywood. "It's an enviro-mess. Leaking gas tanks have polluted the area and the owner is broke and slowly cleaning it up as state and fed funds allow." Poor broke owner, sorry. Good luck with everything.

2) Downtown: A reader wants to know which bank performed the re-appraisals on the Chapman Flats as mentioned in the April 14th article. It's been hell finding out and no answer emerged. However, a message board for Chapman Flats' residents was discovered during our search, so we're going to suggest that person leave a query on that board.

Hollywood's Madrone: Sales Update, Construction Watch

Following that big kickoff party, Hollywood's Madrone, that 180-unit development on the corner of Hollywood Blvd and La Brea, released 20 units about two months back. So how are sales going? 15 are in "contract," according to a sales rep. Breakdown: 9 are in escrow, the remaining six are on their way to being in escrow. We're told the next release of units won't come for a couple months. Meanwhile, the latest construction shots. This beast joins other new construction projects like the Hollywood W Residences and PaliHouse Vine, and other recently completed projects. And oh, there's all that other planned Hollywood development, too.

Hollywood W: Model Unit, Pool Cover Check

Yesterday, you got a look at the latest renderings of the W Hotel & Residences, the 305-room hotel and 143 condo project currently under construction on Hollywood Boulevard. Now, a look at the units themselves, or rather, a peek at the sales office. Some takeaways: Lots of Europeans stopping by, the whole project is expected to be LEED-certified, and the 4,177-square-foot penthouse is likely to be priced at $7 million-$8 million. More description in the gallery.

Rumblings & Bumblings Answers: Hollywood Theater/Homeless Shelter, Burbank Collection, Rampart Construction

Here are the answers to your three tidy questions. If you have a question for next week's R & B, you can email us at la@curbed.com. Questions shall be posted this Tuesday.
2008.05.rampart.jpg
[The mysterious lot at 7th and Rampart]
HOLLYWOOD: That historic Hollywood theater may not be such a good homeless shelter. Commenter Jerjoz reports that the dozen people spotted sleeping under the Hollywood Boulevard theater were "in a line-up with handcuffs [Tuesday] morning. Two squad cars there as well." Meanwhile, anything significant happening to the building? There's a leasing sign on the outside of the building. But Kip Rudd, Sr. Planner at the city's Community Redevelopment Agency, tells Curbed: "We haven’t received anything about the restoration of the building."

BURBANK: An reader from Burbank who wanted to know about the Burbank Collection: Last summer, we wrote about prices dropping at the Burbank Collection--they'd hit $698,491. Today, a Craigslist ad notes that condos now start at $600,000. Just a reminder: The Burbank is 60 lofts and 58 condominiums and two-story penthouses on Palm Avenue. The thing is still under construction, according to the Burbank Collection construction cam.

PICO-UNION: About that lot on 7th and Rampart: Congratulations. Yes, it does fall into one of the 12 worst gang neighborhoods. As far as development, this is a question that'll we'll follow up on as no answer was immediately available, but it's pictured above.

Hollywood and Vine Fire Spares "Billion Dollars" Worth Of Nearby Development

Early morning fire news: A blaze started at about 5:30 am at the Basque nightclub at Hollywood and Vine in Hollywood. The property, which also houses other businesses, was recently sold, City Councilman Eric Garcetti told KTLA-TV. The area is chock full of development, notably the Hollywood and Vine condominium/W Hotel project, and other projects referenced by Garcetti in a press conference this morning. There is about a "billion dollars worth of investment within about two or three square blocks of this area," Garcetti told reporters. He also added: "It's notable we have been having some fires in this area, and we will be looking into it." Indeed, Eater LA notes that there was a fire at restaurant Off Vine just last Sunday. These photos were taken at 7:50 am, by the time the blaze had been contained.

Rumblings & Bumblings: Hollywood Theater/Homeless Shelter, Burbank Collection, Rampart Construction

Once again, three tidy questions have been submitted for this week's Rumblings & Bumblings. If you have an answer, you may leave a comment or you can email us at la@curbed.com. Answers shall be posted this Thursday.

2008.04.hollywoodtheater.jpg

HOLLYWOOD: A question from a reader, who also sent in the above photo. "What's the state of this theater in Hollywood, Curbed? And fyi, that's a row of about 12-15 people sleeping under the awning. I took the photo at 8 am last Friday morning."

BURBANK: An reader from Burbank feels upset and passed over. He writes: "Why doesn't this site cover the construction of the "BURBANK COLLECTION"??? I know it is 100x smaller and less exciting but I wanna know what is going on 'cause construction seems to have stopped or something I don't think the MAY 2008 opening will happen... Any updates???"

PICO-UNION: Total sidenote, but does this area fall into into one of the 12 worst gang neighborhoods in Los Angeles? A reader writes: "What's going on at 7th and Rampart? There is some construction on one of 2 empty lots. That area could use some luxury condos taking advantage of the nearby park and metro station."
