BuildingSpotter: Know Your "Iron Man" Landmarks

"Iron Man" director and Queens native Jon Favreau included his love of 40's era kitsch in Swingers, and now Favreau once again sends a love letter (a hyperactive, blow-shit-up love letter) to Los Angeles in his latest movie. Disney Hall plays a prominent role in one scene, and the now-sold Santa Monica Ferris Wheel makes a cameo in another. Tony Stark's (Robert Downey Jr.'s character) home exterior is in Point Dume overlooking the Pacific. Interiors were shot on a sound stage, but did anyone notice more than a passing resemblance to Lautner's Elrod House in Palm Springs?

Curbed Reader Comment Round-Up

The best posts usually originate in our comments. To give appreciation to our amazing (and sometimes angry) commenters we feature their broad strokes of wisdom in a tidy comment roundup.

2008-01-logo_curbedla.jpg1) When Planners Meet! Let the Bitching Begin "They should just taken all the planners in attendance on a fly over of Las Vegas and surround sprawl and said, 'Don't do this.' And just sent them all home with a very important lesson learned."

2) Construction Watch: UCLA Life Sciences Building in Westwood "Gee, only $885 psf for a building a for-profit developer could have delivered for half that. are all college, school district, museum, hospital and public sector projects run by former pentagon procurement staffers?"

3) Neighbors Hating Americana at Brand's Tower "I agree, this disco tower actually is an improvement. This is a real non-issue and gives NIMBYism a bad name. We can all try harder."

4) Breaking: Grand Avenue Project Construction Delayed Until 2009 "There are, in fact, some eerie parallels with the Disney Hall delays. Both are on County parcels. Both ran out of $$ during a recession. At least DH had a (it turned out later, purely ceremonial) groundbreaking. Then, following excavation, the whole thing ground to a halt because of Frank Gehry's cost overruns. In these years more than one wag derided the project as 'Disney Hole.'"

Yet Another Gehry Project Needs Dulling

2008.03.gehryjoke.jpg

The obligatory April Fool's post is done by Inhabitat, who has uncovered a new Gehry-designed residence in Los Angeles. Built by NASA engineers, the home is a "brilliant reinvention of the modern American house" and "completely confounding both [Gehry's] critics and promoters alike." Pretty, but the glare is gonna be tough on the neighbors.

Reader Rant: Tourist-Unfriendly Downtown Sidewalk Closure

2008-03-tourists.jpg Glad to hear that somebody out there is thinking of the tourists. LA's not all about the Hollywood Sign and Disneyland. The tourists are also starting to arrive Downtown to see our wonderful architecture, and they need good photos to show their friends back in Osaka. Let's try to make it pleasant, heh?

Does anyone know who the IDIOT is who authorized the closure of the sidewalk across from Disney Hall on Grand Avenue? Right now we bus in loads of tourist coming to see the wonderful Disney building and some genius decides to close the sidewalks! Imagine being a European or Japanese tourist who wants to capture a certain architectural angle but cannot due to LA's municipal retardation. Most of the times the closure is unnecessary - no one is there working. As my buddy says: "How can LA build a subway to the sea if they can't even build the few yards of Angels Flight!?!" I'm beginning to agree." -One pissed off Angeleno.
