New To Market: Serial Killer White In Los Feliz

Perfect for the Bret Easton Ellis fan! This three-bedroom, three-bath house in Los Feliz is trying to cash in on some 80's cachet. Yes, there's an 80's theme going on today (see below). Here we have a broker with a penchant for the obvious ("With a strong nod to Richard Meier's work, white is the dominant color"), and some intrepid salesmanship ("The 80's are back, and in a good way"). The house also features "terrazzo and hardwood floors, new windows and top quality bathroom tiles and fixtures." Drop cloth, chainsaws and nail guns optional for the budding Patrick Batemans. Asking price: $1.7 million.

What's Up With That? Utility Boxes Are Graffiti Eyesores, Roach Magnets

2008.07.couchandbox.jpg

Last week, a commenter posed a good question: "What about all of these ugly utility boxes which a springing up around the city? I'm talking about boxes from the city (like the one shown with the craigslist poster on it or the zillion of AT&T boxes going up). They get installed and never maintained, and become a magnet for grafitti, cockroaches, etc. What are the rules regarding them, and what are some of the 'creative' ways people have dealt with the nuisances they create?" Exhibit A: (Last year?) those drab utility boxes in Silver Lake and Echo Park were painted (see above). Couches like to lean against them now.

Rumblings & Bumblings: WeHo's Mystery Style; Dangerbird Records, mmmkay; and Something at Hollywood Park

We've received urgent questions from fidgety readers who need to know what's happening in their hood. We're relying on you, the casual reader to provide an answer. Please leave a response in the comments or you may email us at la@curbed.com. We'll do our best to post an answer on Thursday.

2008-08-what_style_is_this.jpg

1) West Hollywood: A reader needs help identifying the architectural style for the above pictured apartments. "What's up with those odd/appealing buildings on Vista St. in West Hollywood, right next to Plummer Park? There are about five in the same style, but I don't know what the style is. English? Southern Gothic? Maybe they're homes and not apartment buildings?"

2) Silver Lake: Oh. We drove by this but forgot to snap a picture. Good question. "...is there going to be a record store opening in Silver Lake? On the corner of Sunset and Lucile, an out of business furniture store is covered with a banner for Dangerbird Records, are they opening up a record store?"

3) Inglewood: Anybody been to Inglewood lately? "what's that thing they built in the parking lot of Hollywood Park?"

EaterTastings: Reservoir Construction in Silver Lake, Wurstküche Downtown and Is Doughboys Shuttered in Hollywood?

The latest dish from Eater LA, Curbed's hedonistic eating and drinking blog...
2008_08_reservoir.jpg
[Image of Reservoir, Via Eater LA]

SILVER LAKE: The itty bitty Reservoir is finally progressing on the plywood front, with construction starting up again after a months-long stoppage. The space will hold about 40 customers inside, plus a few tables on the patio. Expect a late-August debut.

DOWNTOWN: You know what the Arts District really needs? A hot beef injection. Luckily, Wurstküche is going to be opening in "phases" at 800 East 3rd Street, with gourmet sausages for takeout, a restaurant, bar and possible nightclub.

HOLLYWOOD: It seems that the Doughboys on Highland Ave, open for less than a year, is shuttered. But rather than the typical Health Dept closure, somehow an owner with a steady, waiting line of customers seems to have gone out of business.

Ask Curbed: Scientologists Won't Get Off My Porch

2008.07.scientology.jpg Ah, a friend of Curbed has the old "how do I get rid of unwanted Scientologists question." They never get old. "Dear Curbed: I never had feelings one way or another about Scientologists (live and let live is my feeling), but three just came to my house in Echo Park. They were wearing that "uniform" they wear (aka fbi looking outfits) and the man Scientologist knocked on my screen door and rudely said "Did I know where Mary Somebody was?..." I guess she was the renter before me (I rent). He said they were from the Dianetics Center and then rudely asked me about Mary again, saying "I better tell him if I know her." Given his rudeness, I decided to fuck with him and pretend I did know Mary. So I said MAYBE I know her and then I said Please Leave My Doorstep. He didn't leave, but again asked me about Mary. So I go outside to the doorstep/porch where he is (it's a shared porch with four other renters, a cut-up house), and say again, Please Leave. One of the Scientology women yelled at me that the porch was public property and they could be there. Anyway, eventually they left. But I am wondering if indeed my doorstep/ porch and the whole property is at all "private"; ie, was that woman Scientologist correct that she could be there? I guess I don't "own" any of it, but my landlord, does, right? Thanks."

ConstructionWatch: Silver Lake Library Gets Some Real Bones

Given the rash of news about libraries on Friday (Exposition Park and Glendale libraries are opening), it seemed only fitting to check in on construction at Silver Lake Library. For months, work on the Glendale Boulevard site plodded along, but it's only now that locals are seeing some height. Are there going to be any views of the reservoir from this roof of this? You can check out books, get free Wi-Fi and use a public restroom in spring 2009. That seems quite far off, but which is apparently par for the course in terms of library construction. These things take time, we're told.

Dodgers Fans, Get Ready To Squeeze Into This

2008.07.dodgervan.jpg

The bleak days of shelling out $15 plus for stadium parking are gone, as tomorrow the city will begin offering Dodger "shuttles" that'll carry fans to the games from Union Station. It's all part of that new $70,000 a year city-funded program, and yes, like other cities, Los Angeles will finally have a public transportation option to its baseball stadium. Breath mints, everyone!

Wait, is that thing a mini-van?>>>

Echo Park Lot Patiently Waits To Be Developed

Yesterday's Development du Jour looked at Allesandro Palms, a townhome project that sort of overlooks the weedy lot pictured here, a parcel on Glendale Blvd in Echo Park that was supposed to sprout a 67-unit townhouse development. Well, there was some initial movement on the site, and now...nothing. The city's planning department has no recent information on the site, and the phones number for the developer (Frank Gamwell of PCM or Oxford Street Properties) do not work. The trail is cold, the traffic off that pinball ramp clogged, and the weeds growing.

Historic Status For Griffith Park Considered

2008_07_traveltown.jpgThe great-grandson of Col. Griffith J. Griffith, who bestows most of what is now the largest municipal park in the country to LA, wants more historic preservation protections for the park. Griffith Van Griffith (seriously, that's his name) and his family trust have formally applied for Historic Cultural Monument status, which if approved, would make the park the country's largest historic landmark. The Cultural Heritage Commission will be reviewing the 350-page application on Aug. 21. Granting historic status to the park would not only protect the landscape (the Observatory is already protected), but also "scores of historic Spanish Revival, Moderne and Greek Revival structures built prior to 1958 - from the Travel Town Museum of vintage locomotives of the San Fernando Valley to the city's largest public pool, the 1927 Municipal Plunge of Los Feliz. Even the park's Depression-era bathrooms, drinking fountains and retaining walls would be preserved." While the Sierra Club supports the nomination, City Councilman Tom LaBonge is a bit more cautious. LaBonge has asked the parks department to study how a Griffith Park monument would affect city water, power, and sewer systems. [Image of Griffith Park Traveltown train by flickr user nuovostrada].

Development Du Jour (And Already Chopped): Allesandro Palms

That Echo Park under-construction project mentioned here is all grown up and now has a name: Allesandro Palms. It's a six-unit loft project, located on Allesandro Street, just a cliff's ledge above Glendale Boulevard. The architect is Pedro Birba, a man who was at one point on the city's Board of Building & Safety Commissioners. Maybe that'll sell it for you. According to the listing, prices start at 599,990 for these two-bedroom units. But it looks like the prices have already dropped. The $649,000 listing started out at $749,000.

Sunset Silver Lake Lofts Still Trying To Unload Last Units

Back in March, developer KOR began offering an $100,000 discount on some units at Sunset Silver Lake Lofts, that new condo project on Sunset Boulevard. With about a dozen units left, real estate agents are still trying to move those last condos; we stopped by the development this weekend and the sales agent told us a 1,639-square foot one-bedroom listed for $745,000 was available for $645,000. Yes, gotta move those puppies. Recession is a 'coming.
