Over the weekend, tens of thousands of people came out to celebrate the now-seven-year-long push to revive Downtown's Broadway; for one night only, the doors to seven of the street's historic theaters—many of which are not normally open to the public—were flung open, with free live music performances on the stages inside. All of Broadway was closed to car traffic between Fourth and Seventh, and before the event, officials were estimating that about 5,000 people would visit; in reality, says a Tweet from Bringing Back Broadway, 30 or 35,000 curious pedestrians showed up to roam the street.
Those who missed out can still get a peek at what's going on inside Broadway's wonderful row of ornate theater gems—below are shots from the weekend taken inside the Million Dollar Theatre, Los Angeles Theatre, Palace Theatre, Tower Theatre, Globe Theatre (which is still in the middle of a renvoation), Orpheum Theatre, and the United Artists Theatre inside the Ace Hotel. (The Clifton's Cafeteria, which is getting its own makeover, was also relit in neon for the first time in decades.)
