When a lovely Art Deco building at La Brea and Willoughby was razed without much warning last summer, there was mostly outrage, but there had to have been a little bit of curiosity too about what would be coming to the site instead. Now we have our first look at the mixed-use building that's headed to that northeast corner of the intersection—According to city planning documents, the seven-story project will have 169 apartments of the studio, one- and two-bedroom variety, 14 of which will be reserved for very low-income residents, plus retail in approximately 37,000 square feet on the ground level.
Parking for retail will be on one underground level, while parking for residents will be in two above-ground levels on floors two and three of the building; in all, there will be a substantial 303 spaces. It's hard to tell from these renderings, but additional images in the planning docs show that the residential apartments will be in two wings, and that central space on top of the parking levels will be open and communal (with a pool!). 904 La Brea, as this mixed-user's being called, will be right across the street from the La Brea Gateway mixed-user and just south of an in-the-works office building.
