The exploratory shaft built in the Miracle Mile for the Purple Line extension is uncovering marine fossils dating back as far as 300,000 years, and they indicate the area was once a cold, wet place. Metro paleontologist Kim Scott says most of SoCal was once completely underwater and the petrified sand dollars, clams, and snails also show us the water was chilly, so the climate was probably more similar to NorCal than the Mediterranean temps we know and love now. These fossils are also way older than the ones across the street at the La Brea Tar Pits, which only go back about 45,000 years. [KPCC, previously]
