Talk of bringing pedicabs back to LA (they were regulated into the ground in 2009) first began in 2012 when, at the request of then-Councilmember (now Mayor) Eric Garcetti, the LA Department of Transportation began studying a pilot program in Hollywood as a way to link up the attractions at Hollywood and Highland with those on Vine. The idea's been waiting since then to get off the ground, but got a boost today when the City Council ok'd a closer look into permitting the bicycle-powered pedicabs in both Hollywood and San Pedro, says the Daily News. The city has to regulate pedicabs via permits, since it can't ban a bicycle, but it can require a permit to operate one. If they create a permitting network, they remove a major hurdle to getting these cool two-wheeled transports on the street. Santa Monica has had pedicabs for a while now, and the system seems to be working out for them.
