A few years ago, County Supe Mark Ridley-Thomas asked for ideas on making Slauson Avenue--from Angeles Vista Boulevard to La Brea Avenue--into a more people-friendly street (wider sidewalks, bike lanes, median landscaping, lighting, traffic lane reduction?), and now we're starting to find out what kind of facelift the corridor will actually be getting. The big thing is there'll still be lots of space for cars, but also new features for walkers and bikers. A full report on the project is forthcoming, but here's what Ridley-Thomas is willing to share about the proposed "comprehensive streetscape improvement plan and business revitalization program":
-- Three car lanes in each direction will remain, which should ease concerns of the commute-minded passers-through; it also prevents the project from triggering a requirement for an environmental impact report.
-- A "bicycle route, raised landscaped medians, pedestrian lighting, and improvements to the parkway (including benches and landscaping), will be made in order to improve the public right-of-way and create a pedestrian-friendly environment."
-- KOA Corporation has been hired to design the final project. They are planning a meeting in early 2014 "to obtain input from the community regarding the style and types of parkway improvements."
-- More than half a million dollars have been allocated for a Community Business Revitalization Program for small business owners on the south side of the street--that will pay for façade improvements like new paint, window and awning replacement, extra lighting, and improved signage. The business owners on the north side of the street "declined to participate." The gall!
