We've been talking about a robot garage at West Hollywood's City Hall--where cars will be stacked vertically by an automated mechanism--since the damn city was incorporated in 1984 (not really, but it's been a long time). But now the project is lurching into gear with the widening of Sweetzer Avenue this fall and winter; a necessity for the robo-garage, according to WeHoville. Starting in November and lasting until March, a short portion of Sweetzer south of Santa Monica Boulevard will be widened by four feet; plus, power poles will be removed from the sidewalk and placed underground (always a good thing). A nearby fire hydrant (which reckless drivers apparently crash into constantly) will also be pulled out, and a left turn lane will be added to northbound Sweetzer. Meanwhile, WeHo City Hall's surface parking lot closes in January, when work on the $16-million robot garage, complete with a public plaza and art, finally begins.
