When work started in May 2012 on South Park's Avant mixed-user, the guess for an opening date was November 2013. Turns out developer Century West wasn't too far off--they announced today that the two-building project, with one facing Figueroa and the other Flower, will open in February 2014. This site was once set to host a huge tower designed by repetitive starchitect Daniel Libeskind, and Avant is rather stumpy in comparison; still, it will hopefully breathe some fresh residential life into mostly-moribund Flower (pictured; the stretch south of the Pico Metro station certainly has potential). Avant will have 440 units, with 522-square-foot studios, 692-square-foot one-bedrooms, 1,003-square-foot two-bedrooms, and 1,096-square-foot live/work units--prices start at $1,750 and go up to $3,000. Amenities include pool, yoga room, clubhouse, bike parking, plank flooring and Koehler fixtures; there'll also be retail on Fig and Flower, either in a few big spaces or several smaller ones. There was once talk of a third Avant building on Figueroa, but that's now been scrapped. *PR for Avant tells us they were mistaken; there is a third building happening and it should open in December 2014.
