More details are emerging on the planned mixed-user on Santa Monica Boulevard that will replace the famous Palm restaurant, an adjacent parking lot, and an auto repair shop. As expected, the city approved an extension on the development agreement, giving developer 9001 Santa Monica Boulevard LLC another two years to start construction; work must now begin by July 2016. The interesting thing, though, is that the extension should ensure the project gets built sooner rather than later, Wehoville reports. The prior development plan called for construction to be completed in two phases, to allow the Palm restaurant to remain open throughout work. Now, without the separate stages, construction on the 42-unit project (with 19,000 square feet of retail) can start sooner. The one caveat: the Palm will leave its 38-year-old home earlier than previously thought (though it's not known if it will move into the new development's retail space, as depicted in the rendering).
