Now we know what's going to go in the giant glass globe at the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures planned for the old LACMA-owned May Company building at Wilshire and Fairfax: everybody say hello to the David Geffen Theate. The Hollywood Reporter says Geffen gave $25 million to the museum for the right to slap his name on the theater, which will show movies year-round in addition to hosting premieres and "symposia about the crafts of moviemaking." The Renzo Piano and Zoltan Pali-designed spherical wing and 1939 Streamline Moderne May Company building will bring 300,000 square feet of exhibition and event space, screening rooms, and education centers to Museum Mile. The Academy Museum got off to a rough start (initial plans had a different site and architects) but things seem to be falling into place at last: a fundraising campaign launched last year is over halfway to its $300 million goal, though the tentative opening date has been pushed back from 2016 to 2017.
