Palms is usually seen as the down-market Westside neighborhood, but things may be changing. Local developer Frost/Chaddock held a ceremony today, with the mayor in tow, in honor of a five-story mixed-use project they're just starting work on. F/C touts the project's proximity to the Expo Line's forthcoming Palms station, about a half-mile away and opening in a couple years; residents will be able to take the train to jobs in Santa Monica and Downtown. The unnamed project will have 115 apartments (with 17 set aside for low-income residents), groundfloor restaurant space, landscaped courtyards, and rooftop gardens. The units are described as "smaller, efficiently-designed," so hopefully they'll be somewhat affordable. Just down the street, a seven-story mixed-user is rising at the corner of Motor and Palms, and the neighborhood recently got a Culver City-esque restaurant/bar. Can you smell the gentrification?
