On Friday, a City Council committee approved new regulations (pdf) for valet parkers in hopes of cracking down on some of their shadier behavior; they've now been passed to the City Council for approval. Whoo! The LA Times reports: "The new ordinance would require a valet operator in Los Angeles to obtain a master permit, check employees' backgrounds and carry liability insurance. It would also prohibit valet operators from using public street parking without permission." The ordinance has been under construction since 2009 and was written with the input (of course!) of several valet companies, who seem to be happy with it, since it will crack down on unlawful competition. If the City Council passes the new rules, they'll go into effect in Hollywood first, "then be phased in throughout the rest of the city." There are already similar rules in Beverly Hills, Santa Monica, Pasadena, and West Hollywood.
