Orange County is really stepping up its transit game lately. Anaheim just broke ground on the distinctive ARTIC transportation hub that will serve as the future station for Metrolink, Amtrak, and maybe, one day, California high-speed rail trains. Now, the OC Register reports that the Anaheim city council is considering a 3.2-mile streetcar system that will move tourists and workers from ARTIC to the GardenWalk mall, the Anaheim Convention Center, and Disneyland. The proposal would cost $318 million, less than half of a monorail proposal, which is also being weighed (much of the money would come from state and federal grants). While the 10 streetcars would run in car traffic, mostly along Katella Avenue and Harbor Boulevard, they're seen as a better option than a simple bus service enhancement. Both the council--currently reviewing all transportation options before committing to the streetcar--and Disney are supportive of the plan, and if all goes as planned, the little trains could be running in about six years.
