A proposed widening of Sunset Boulevard in Brentwood and Bel-Air is quickly galvanizing Westsiders. After the LADOT proposed the widening—which would take place between Barrington Ave. and near the 405—in April, homeowners were quick to voice opposition. The Westside Today website has a roundup of letters from various Westside homeowner associations and chambers of commerce to Councilmember Bill Rosendahl. The highlights: the Brentwood Homeowners Assoc. is the only group supporting the added eastbound lane, while at least eight oppose it. The BHA says the widening will reduce congestion and has support from at least 73% of its members. All other groups cite the "under-the-radar" plan to turn Sunset into a freeway that will rip up trees and bring down property values, and ultimately do nothing to reduce traffic. Many groups cite the precedent that would be set by violating the Brentwood-Pacific Palisades Community Plan that prohibits the widening of Sunset: arguments could then be made to widen the whole boulevard all the way to the Pacific.
