BREAKING: Malibu on Fire
Sunday, October 21, 2007, by jwilliams

Oh, it's Sunday. But still, Malibu is burning all around Malibu Canyon Road. Malibu Presbyterian Church has been fully engulfed and destroyed, reports abc7, in addition to several other structures including an animal hospital. The 40-60 mph winds, expected to last for the next few days, are driving the fires north, south, west and east. Considering it's only 9:30 am, this is very bad news.

Also, the Malibu Castle, previously featured on Curbed, is fully engulfed in flames at the moment. Looks to be a total loss. Arghh.

So sad to see Malibu on fire, and hard to believe
that the Castle is gone? Thought it was built
of stone and would survive a fire?

Interesting note, was just looking at November
issue of Los Angeles magazine yesterday,
featuring a cover story about how the worst
disaster to the city would be fires! How ironic

Yep pretty bad sight - just 1 miles from where I live. Tons of smoke! http://www.somelifeblog.com/2007/10/malibu-fire-pepperdine-santa-ana-winds.html

Fantastic! Jesus is angry at gluttony. Not a better place to burn down on the face of this earth.

The news is acting like the castle is some kind of architectural masterpiece. Kitschy landmark, yes? Versailles, ummm, no. Kitschyness aside, I do hope they got out safely and had insurance. PS it was not made of stone, just faced to look like it was...

But hey, as long as the celebrity homes are safe then I guess everything else is a wash, right? I wish the news media would realize that every home is of value to who lives there, regardless of whether or not they are actors. Sheesh.

...also, I can only imagine the panic setting in for the CVS pharmacy patrons who won't be able to get their sanity meds...I do feel more sorry for their assistants and spouses, though.

I wish the news media would get someone with a brain to announce what is going on. First of all, I do not care if a rehab that once housed Brittany Spears burned down. I do care that my family is safe. No they are not celebs, just wonderful, caring, hard-working people. There are tons of people who are being affected by this. Just because someone is rich and famous it does not make their tragedy worse than the average guy.

I think it really says something about that castle's construction that it burned so easily.

My house burned down in Malibu in 1993. We lived in that home for 26 years
and batteled over the years 10 fires. I have to admit, I still have a sense of panic when I see the fires. I'm kind of glad I live in New York state now. My heart goes out to everyone who is experiencing this kind of devistation right now. God bless these people. Trust your fire department

Jesus must have thought it was time for a new house.

Alas the castle is a place where many a maiden had her heart flutter with the solemn vestiges of true love in the year of her most sacred of vows.

A true loss, indeed.

All these posts about Jesus.... crack me up!

It's a fire, just a fire guys! Some things happen without divine intervention (like big bangs, evolution, etc etc)

LOL!

So sad to see the church burn. :( I grew up in that church and got married there. In fact we helped set up a disaster recovery center there after the fires in 1993. Great church and great people.

Burn baby burn. Nothing like a good blaze to rid us of a few Mercedeses, obnoxious chihuahuas and the people who coddle them. This can only do wonders for the gene pool.

The fires are a naturally occurring event. What's unnatural is the rampant development which has acted as kindling, fueling these fires well beyond their normal course. Is there any surprise that this is happening?

what the hell? I know its cool to hate rich people, but peoples HOMES and FAMILIES are at risk here. I know mine is. I also know that not all of Malibu is full of rich brats.

The castle was stucco over a wood frame with lots of sumac all around it. I lived two doors down on Malibu Crest Drive for awhile past Irene Dazzan-Palmer's house which survived, and next to architect Doug Rucker's all wood house. Does anyone know if Doug's old house survived?

And the biggest problems with Mailbu and fire are the city's unwillingness to remove sumac - aka gasoline with leaves - from residential areas, the city's unwililngness to require that all wood shake roofs be replaced, and the city's refusal to require that decks be fireproof.

Sad and scarey. I hope the animals out there are ok. I feel bad for the homes that are being burned and the people out there. I hope they can get the fire contained soon. It looks really bad. I pray the winds settle down.

malibu may not be my favorite area but i don't wish the residents the turmoil of fire.
I remember the 93 fires. those were awful and sad.

btw throwing stones not great idea...fire might not get my area but an earthquake could be deadly.

Do not worry about the residents of Malibu. They and their chihuahuas will be safely transported out of town to hotels in the Valley while the fire insurance money will come in handy for those desired home makeovers. Sad to hear about the landmarks but people of Malibu knew very well what they were getting into. Not over a month since Suzanne Summer's Mansion burned down among others in the usual Malibu firestorm.

God is "a consuming fire" that destroys people. 9:3

When God gets mad -- watch out! He'll starve you to death, burn you with fire, and send vicious beasts to devour you. He'll "destroy both the young man and the virgin, the suckling also with the man of gray hairs." Not even the helpless and innocent are spared by this psychotic God. 32:21-26

After killing everyone, "they burnt the city with fire, and all that was therein." Only the valuables (silver, gold, brass, and iron) did they keep to "put into the treasury of the house of the Lord." 6:24

By Joshua at October 22, 2007 1:10 AM

29.

Job had done nothing wrong and was stricken with horrible loss. His friends sat around and told him he must have done something horrible to make God mad at him. God was angry with the friends for so judging Job. Who are we as people to understand the mind of God. Be not so quick to judge a city or the people within. Judgement is for God alone. I hope that this tragegdy becomes a time of growth for all the people in Malibu and they pull closer to the Lord through their losses. Our place is to pray and to help in any way possible.

The comments here are sick! It's not ok to or funny to be happy at horrible loss.

Fire happens because of the wind the fuel the heat. It has nothing to with the bible or god.

What's worse, annoyingly rich Malibu resident's or annoyingly middle class residents with class envy? Hope everyone is ok though.

God burning them is the best solution.

#33 Ignorance is bliss isn't it? Then you don't have to really care about the people involved. Or maybe you just have fun fanning the flames of anger in people. You like to get a rise out of others. No matter what beliefs people hold, how much money they have, or what ethicity they were born wtih, each person is a unique valuable creation.

By sal at October 22, 2007 9:29 AM

God & Jesus are not burning Malibu.
Wind swept winds and sparks from a downed power line caused the the fire.

This summer floods in the Midwest destroyed many homes and properties. People died. Lives were devestated. Businesses lost.

Florida had many fires last year.

Atlanta had heat waves that killed.

Ice storm last year in new england caused lost lives and destroyed properties.

It is not just malibu.

what gospel do you follow that would allow such hatred?

Have been on disaster watch most of the day. If I here ONE MORE STUPID HOMEOWNER say "well, I've been here since '94 and it's never been this bad", I'll scream. OK, I'll scream more. Idiots. Get in your cars and get out. All you are doing is blocking the roads for the firetrucks. Anyone remember OAKLAND? Fine. Stay in your house and die or get the hell out. Your choice but am sick of my tax dollars being spent on rescuing people from their own stupidity. Your neighbors will thank you when their house burns down cuz the fireman had to haul your ass out of the way.
