LA Animal Services: Gansevoort Dog OK
Friday, September 7, 2007, by Dakota

2007.08.doghappy.jpg Following our posting of video of the Gansevoort Dog, the guard pooch at the 9th and Grand construction lot, an officer from LA Animal Services visited the site yesterday and also this morning. "The dog seems in good health," reports Ed Boks, general manager at LAAS. According to Boks, the dog is being given food and water twice a day, is not tethered (apparently tethering=very bad thing), the lot is clean, and there's shelter available. Also, the dog we befriended in a moment of canine-blogger love isn't the only dog to guard the site; dogs are rotated in and out at 9th and Grand, according to Bok. (Hmm. Anyone else seen another dog down there? If so, ask him if he'd like to be on a blog.)

But moving on! What's going on with the site now that the Gansevoort Hotel has pulled out?

BTW, Gansevoort, not Gavensvoort. I don't blame you guys, there aren't too many Dutch place names around L.A., except for Van Nuys, which is pretty easy to spell.

Just walked by there. Same dog trying to sit in the tiny bit of shade the doorway provides.

Like Ed Boks could tell a dead dog from a live one!

My guess is that nothing is going to happen now that they have pulled out. That ny family has plenty of cash and has been known to sit on properties for years and years without doing anything until someone presents them a deal that is too good for them to pass up.

Wow, Ed Boks loves the limelight, even if its a blog...he shows his face for ONE dog.In the meantime shelter employees & volunteers are quitting like never before since the conditions the animals endure before being killed are attrocious. However you pose the question to Boks, he denies it all..including the quitting...millions were spent to build state-of-the-art shelters that are just a shell. Behind the airconditioned desks, the neuter & spay clinics are closed b/c they don't have money for vets. Animals are living off donated food from the public & sleep on donated newspaper...but he looks good...

"apparently tethering=very bad thing"

Forgive if I'm misinterpreting but are you implying that confining a dog inhumanely is acceptable?

If so, just an FYI: California was the first state in the nation to put a tethering law on the books, so it isn't just "apparently" a bad thing, it's a straight-up and righteous bad thing:

SB 1578: On January 1, 2007, California pased a law to limit the chaining and tethering of dogs. SB 1578, otherwise known as the tethering law, makes it illegal to tether, fasten, chain, tie or restrain a dog to a doghouse, tree fence or any other stationary object for more than three hours in a 24-hour period. This law works in conjunction with California Penal Code section 597t which states that confined animals must have access to food, water and shelter. Violation of the new law could result in an infraction or misdemeanor punishable by a fine not to exceed $1,000 per dog and/or six months in county jail.
