What's Up, Foot Sign

A reader wants to know what's up with the Sunset Foot Clinic sign in Silver Lake, a sign that shows a rotating Happy Foot/Sad Foot. How long has it been there? Are there other Happy Feet/Sad Feet in the city? And we wonder: Are there an unusually high number of foot clinics in LA?

1.

The sign went up right after the plaza was built sometime in the mid-80s.

Thanks Curbed. If I ever have to make good on the threat "You best get out my face before I put my foot up your ass", I now know to go to Silverlake after extracting said foot.

As a matter of fact, I received a direct mail piece from a foot clinic the other day.

How come there are only right feet, huh? What about us poor sots who are left-footed? No one cares...

I actually went to this place for an ingrown toenail, solely thanks to the joy the sign brings me every time I drive by it, and my belief that good advertising should be rewarded. Also, I figured that any doctor who puts a sign like that in front of his practice would make for highly entertaining conversation.

Sadly, Doctor Schlomo Schmuel did not have 1/100th the personality of his happy/sad foot sign, but my toe did leave happy.

I read an interview with Beck where he talked about the early days, living in Silverlake and seeing a rotating foot sign out his window.

I don't know much about the other than the curse: if you pass by while the foot is sad then you're doomed to have bad luck the rest of the day, but if you pass by while the foot is happy the opposite is true.

The curse comes up in Jonathan Lethem's snacky little book about Silver Lake and Echo Park, You Don't Love Me Yet.

I actually give directions to my fave thai restaurant using the sign as a reference. "make a left at the happy foot/sad foot sign. can't miss it."

The foot is wearing shoes. Stranger still, the foot is also wearing gloves...

The Eels have a song about it, aptly called "Sad Foot Sign". It makes me happy every time I hear it. Or sad, depending.

There is a sad foot sign at a foot clinic on Firestone Blvd. in South Gate, next to South Gate High School. I always laugh at the sad foot.
